Succesful conference opens new research questions about the organization of the emergency departments

DESIGN-EM hosted a national joint academic and practitioner conference on the organization of the Danish emergency departments on December 2, 2013. No less than 150 participants from hospitals, regions, business, agencies and ministries came together at Aarhus University to hear about the first findings of the pilot study performed by DESIGN-EM in the five emergency departments in the Central Denmark Region.

Professors Hans Kirkegaard and Børge Obel gave an introduction to organization design as a research and practice field, and discussed how organization designs correlate with patient satisfaction, quality, and resource consumption.

Anders Møllekær, MD, MBA, and Ph.D. scholar, presented a model of how to work with organization design in the emergency departments, followed by a presentation of the different forms of organizational designs chosen by the five emergency departments in the Central Denmark Region.

The five emergency departments then presented their own success stories and visions for the future, complemented by presentations of the five regions about the broader policy and strategic plans for the regions’ emergency departments.

Tilburg University brought their experiences and research results from the Netherlands, and the day ended with a lively discussion with representatives from the regions,  the Organization of Danish Medical Societies, the Danish Society for Emergency Medicine, DAENA and the Danish Medical Association.

Valuable input for further research and activities

The DESIGN-EM researchers got a lot of valuable input for further research and have already been invited to visit several regions to discuss new research collaborations, including how to expand the pilot study of the five emergency departments in the Central Denmark Region to additional regions.

The continued training and specialization of the emergency departments’ staff was a key issue during the conference, and DESIGN-EM was encouraged to participate in continuing education activities in the future.

Further discussions on Linkedin

A LinkedIn group has now been created for further discussions and knowledge sharing. Already more than 50 people have joined this online community that is open for everybody with an interest in organization design of emergency departments.
