The Maasai Mara Science and Development Action was founded in 2014 by Aarhus University in Denmark and the Danish owned safari camp Karen Blixen Camp, which is located in Mara North, Kenya. The Karen Blixen Camp is deeply involved in the conservation activities in Mara North Conservancy and values the need for research based knowledge across disciplines.
Maasai Mara University, University of Nairobi and Justus-Liebig Universität Giessen (Germany) have joined the founding group together with a representative for the local Maasai community. About 30 researchers from a broad range of disciplines are involved in the upstart and other researchers from around the world are already expressing interest in joining the research network.
