Who blows the whistle on fraud?

Assistant Professor Sebastian Oelrich and his co-author Professor Anne Chwolka (Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg, Germany) have published a new paper in Journal of Management Control. This study investigates why some employees choose to blow the whistle on organizational misconduct despite facing severe retaliation and negative social perceptions. By examining the influence of Dark Triad traits (Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy) and moral reasoning, the researchers found that these deviant personality characteristics can make internal whistleblowing more likely. Their findings have implications for whistleblowing systems, corporate governance policies, and policymakers, highlighting the need for tailored protection policies that consider the diverse motivations behind whistleblowing.
