New publication in the MIT Sloan Management Review journal on Leaders’ Critical Role in Building a Learning Culture

Professor Thomas Borup Kristensen and Senior Strategy Consultant Henrik Saabye have a new publication in the MIT Sloan Management Review journal on Leaders’ Critical Role in Building a Learning Culture.

Organizational learning and adaptation are crucial for business survival amidst technological disruptions, environmental challenges, and shifting customer demands. However, many leaders neglect their role in facilitating learning, especially during large-scale transformations. Delegating learning to specialists often results in short-term gains but fails to build a capacity for ongoing learning and problem-solving within the organization. This study, conducted at Lego and Velux, reveals that effective learning facilitation by leaders requires a “go slow to go fast” approach. Deliberate and thoughtful leadership fosters lasting change by developing employees’ systematic problem-solving skills. By framing problems as growth opportunities, leaders at both companies prioritized long-term skill development over immediate issue resolution, thereby enhancing organizational learning and adaptability.
