2nd Workshop: Patterns of Interaction - New opportunities and Challenges

Sandbjerg Estate, Denmark, July 23 to 25, 2025

In today’s rapidly evolving work environment, understanding the dynamics of formal and informal structures is crucial for fostering effective knowledge creation and collaboration. The adoption of AI, remote work, and advanced tools, enabling tracing of real world interactions and affective responses, may open new opportunities to theorize and test how formal and informal structures influence knowledge creation.

This workshop aims to collaborately explore the influences of these structures on realized interactions—who actually talks to whom—and how this impacts knowledge creation within organizations. The topics include but are not limited to:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): Exploring how AI tools and technologies are reshaping communication patterns and decision-making processes.
  • Remote Work: Examining the impact of remote and hybrid work models on formal and informal interactions.
  • Commons: Understanding the role of shared resources, communities and collaborative spaces in facilitating knowledge exchange.
  • Workplace Relationships: Investigating the influence of interpersonal relationships on knowledge sharing and innovation.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Exploring how diverse teams and inclusive practices affect interaction patterns and knowledge creation.
  • Technology and Emotions: Leveraging advanced technologies to measure emotional and affective responses during interactions, providing deeper insights into the quality and impact of these interactions.

We expect that many different methodologies can contribute to this development, for example, but not limited to, network analysis, experiments, empirical data, and simulation studies. How may these different methodologies, individually or combined, provide new insight into this emergent area?

Workshop Objectives:

  • Discuss the possibilities of developing new theories and understandings of knowledge creation.
  • Explore the relevance of these insights for modern organizations, whether in private workplaces, public institutions or communities.
  • Share practical examples and case studies on the implementation of advanced technologies in conceptualizing and measuring interaction patterns.
  • Managerial implications of the changing patterns of interaction in the modern workplace.

Join us for an engaging and insightful workshop where we will explore the intersection of formal and informal structures, advanced technologies, and their impact on organizational knowledge creation. The workshop will include paper presentations, panel discussions, as well as discussions of work in progress to shape a future research agenda in this area.

The workshop will take place from, noon July 23 (Wednesday) to, noon 25 (Friday) at the Aarhus University’s conference center Sandbjerg Estate (https://www.sandbjerg.dk/). There is a good connection from Copenhagen Airport (CPH) to Sønderborg (SGD), which is a 10 minute drive to the conference venue. It is also possible to drive or take the train from Copenhagen or Hamburg.
