Abstract
Many cost-leader companies face the paradoxical management task of achieving the contradictory objectives of improving environmental performance while keeping costs low. We aim to unpack a cost/sustainability paradox, elaborating on coping with and making sense of the paradox and the tensions it creates in the complex system comprising a buying company, its employees, and its suppliers, who are ultimately subject to the paradoxical demands. We do so by mapping tensions as they unfold across a focal buying company and selected suppliers and teasing out managerial responses, including the potential for novel creative outcomes to meet the paradoxical performance demands.
