Abstract
Sickness presenteeism – attending work while ill – is a common workplace behavior with implications for employee health, subsequent sickness absence, and organizational effectiveness. Importantly, attendance behavior is not solely an individual decision but is embedded in social and relational dynamics within the workplace. Although prior research suggests a positive relationship between leader and employee presenteeism, the conditions under which this relationship is strengthened or weakened remain poorly understood. Drawing on social perspectives on workplace behavior, this paper examines how psychological safety and value congruence shape the influence of leader presenteeism on employee presenteeism. Using longitudinal multilevel data from employees and managers in the Danish public sector, it aims to provide a more nuanced understanding of the leader–employee presenteeism relationship by moving beyond direct relationships and identifying important boundary conditions. The study also offers practical insights for promoting healthier attendance norms in organizations.
