The impact of artificial intelligence on management science – a Savagian perspective
Abstract
AI will have a profound impact on the field of management science. This has become apparent, especially after the hype surrounding ChatGPT. However, this impact is not limited to the management subject matter, but also extends to the research process itself. What form will this impact take? This essay seeks to offer a preliminary evaluation. This exploration is built upon Savage's dichotomy between small worlds and grand worlds, which serves as a conceptual framework for assessing the scientific insights that necessitate true creativity and therefore lie beyond the reach of AI. Once AI reaches a sufficient level of maturity, it is anticipated that it will be capable of assuming a considerable portion of previous research. In doing so, AI has the potential to elevate the process of knowledge creation to new heights, enabling research to concentrate more heavily on theory development and application. Consequently, a significant shift in research structures can be anticipated. The challenge in the years ahead will be to manage this transformation in a constructive manner.
Everyone is welcome!
