Do board’s specialist capabilities matter for firms’ cybersecurity maturity?

Abstract
Cybersecurity has rapidly become a strategic priority for firms, leading boards of directors increasingly involved in decisions surrounding cybersecurity and cyber risk oversight. Yet, prior research indicates that board directors often lack the relevant expertise needed to effectively govern cybersecurity. In this project, we examine whether board-level capabilities matter for a firms’ cybersecurity maturity (CM). Specifically, we investigate whether the presence of directors with IT-related educational backgrounds or prior professional experience in IT firms is associated with higher levels of cybersecurity maturity. To address this question, we use registry-based data on Danish firms’ cybersecurity maturity combined with detailed information on directors’ educational qualifications and career histories. This unique dataset allows us to explore how board-level capabilities relate to firms’ cybersecurity preparedness. In the seminar, we will introduce our research design and share preliminary results from the ongoing analysis.

Everyone is welcome!
