This model explores how a new language (creole) can emerge when speakers of different languages are put in the same space and need to communicate. It is based on the well-documented case of St. Thomas during colonization, during which Dutch creole emerged across the island.
The model was created for use in the linguistics department, in collaboration with Professor Peter Bakker at Aarhus University. Students explore under which assumptions about human interaction, human learning and social structure we see convergence to a novel, shared language. The overall goal is for students to test out different outcomes and to get acquainted with the use of computational models in research.
