A Temporal Understanding of Role Models in Identity Transitions: Constraining and Enabling Role Model Situations

Abstract
A recognized part of identity transitions is the use of role models, however, the temporal understanding of this remains unclear. To address this gap we take a 3-year longitudinal qualitative approach attempting to understand how different role models influence role identity transitions. Our findings provide new knowledge in two ways: first, we extend current knowledge on role models by providing a new type; perceived ideal. Second, our findings suggest that the presence of both positive and negative role models facilitate enabling situations towards a new role identity, while the presence of perceived ideals, absence of role models, loss of role models, or lack of recognition from role models facilitate constraining situations in role identity transitions. We present a model with our temporal findings illustrating that these different constraining and enabling situation can change during an identity transition. These novel findings contribute to an understanding of the underlying dynamics underpinning role identity transitions which enlarge both theoretical and practical knowledge.
